Minnesota Electrician Exam Tools: Calculators and Drills
These are the pages you work rather than read. Each one shows its steps and names the section behind the number, because a tool that hands you an answer teaches you nothing you can carry into a room where the arithmetic has to come from you.

The eight calculators
Voltage drop calculator. The resistance method and the approximate formula side by side, so you can see where they part.
Conduit fill calculator. The Chapter 9 tables for the percentages, the raceway areas and the conductor dimensions, with the fill worked step by step.
Box fill calculator. Every box size in 314.16 and the categories that get counted differently.
Wire size calculator. Load in, conductor out, with the termination temperature rule at 110.14(C) shown rather than hidden.

The six games
Ampacity sprint. Table 310.16 against a clock: you are given a conductor and a temperature column and you name the ampacity.
Wire size sprint. The same table in reverse: a load, and the smallest conductor that carries it.
Which table. Ten prompts a round. Read the job, name the table or section you would open first. Three levels.
Code navigation race. Twenty timed prompts a round, picking the chapter, article or section out of four.
Spot the violation. Twelve drawn scenes. Click the one thing that is wrong, and every region gets an explanation.
Grounding or bonding sorter. Twenty four items, sorted one at a time, on the pair this trade confuses most.
The four hands-on labs
A lab is a page you work rather than read. You drag something, turn something or connect something, and it answers with the number it just changed and the section that governs it.
Conduit bending simulator. Drag the rise and turn the angle dial, and the multiplier, the shrink, the take up and every mark move with it.
Switch wiring lab. Drag conductor ends onto terminals on a three way and four way circuit, flip the switches, and a checker names the section behind each fault.
Box fill lab. Add devices and conductors to a box and watch the count move.
Grounding electrode lab. Build a grounding electrode system and see which electrodes qualify.

The drills
Daily question. One original multiple choice question every morning, the same one for everybody, with the worked explanation and the section cited.
Diagnostic. Twenty four questions across the main areas, scored by area, ordered worst first.
Article drill. A timed drill on which article governs a question, scored in seconds.
Calculation ladder. Eight rungs of calculation work, the first one free and working with no network.

The eligibility calculator
Am I eligible yet. Put in the time you have and it checks it against the rule that decides.
Minnesota is unusual here, so the tool is built to match. The state counts months in named categories rather than hours. A Class A journeyworker license needs 48 months with at least 24 in wiring for and installing. A Class A master needs 60 with minimums of two months each in planning, laying out and supervising. A power limited technician needs 36 with at least 12 in wiring for and installing technology circuits. A Class B installer needs 12.
The rule behind those figures is Minnesota Rules 3800.3520 and the DLI experience requirements page. An approved two year post high school electrical course is worth a maximum of one year of credit.

Which edition these tools hold
The table values in these tools were read in the 2026 National Electrical Code. Minnesota examinations moved to that edition on September 8, 2026 and permits filed on or after August 17, 2026 are on it too, so for once the tool and the paper agree.
The tables themselves kept their numbers through the edition change. Table 310.16 for ampacity, 314.16 for box fill, the Article 430 motor tables and the Chapter 9 tables all carry the same numbers in both editions we hold. Transformer protection is the one that moved, from 450.3 to 450.5.
We cite section numbers and describe what a rule covers. We do not reproduce code text and we do not reproduce tables. Check any number that decides an answer in your own copy.
How to use them without learning the wrong thing
Work the problem on paper first, then run it through the tool and compare the steps rather than the totals. A wrong total says something broke. A step by step comparison says which step.
Then log the step you got wrong. Twenty problems logged that way point at your two real weak spots inside a week.

Which code edition are the tool values from?
The 2026 National Electrical Code, which is the edition Minnesota examinations moved to on September 8, 2026 and the edition permits filed on or after August 17, 2026 use.
Can I use these calculators in the Minnesota exam?
No. DLI allows an electronic calculator of the common desk type with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square root and percentage functions, and no other electronic devices in the building.
Does the eligibility calculator use hours?
It uses months, because Minnesota does. The state counts experience in named categories with a minimum and a maximum in each, under Minnesota Rules 3800.3520.

Which drill helps most for a Minnesota exam?
