Minnesota Electrician Exam Day: St. Paul, 8:15 to 1:45

Minnesota runs its own examinations in one building, on one day of the week, at one start time. There is no test center network to choose from and no seat to hunt for, which makes the day simple and the scheduling less so.

Where and when

The Licensing Examination Guide is specific. Examinations are held weekly, generally every Wednesday, at the Department of Labor and Industry, 443 Lafayette Road N., St Paul, MN 55155.

All examination types administered at the St. Paul office begin at 8:15 a.m. and end at 1:45 p.m. That window is five and a half hours, and it is the same window whether your paper is 25 questions or 80.

There is no third party test vendor in Minnesota. No PSI, no Pearson VUE and no Prov appears anywhere in the DLI examination documentation.

Getting a date

Two rules from the guide decide your timeline. Applicants must schedule their examinations ahead of time, and walk-ins are not permitted to take an examination. And before anyone may schedule an examination date, the individual's examination application must be approved by the department.

So the order is application, department approval, then a date. The mn.gov elicense entry puts the whole cycle at approximately 60 days, dependent on response time for experience verification, board approval and examination scheduling.

The application fee is $50, it is not refundable, and the guide adds that application and examination fees for applicants that do not qualify for examination are not refundable either.

Identification

A picture ID must be presented by all applicants when they appear for examination. That is the guide's whole rule on identification.

It does not name a second form, a signature requirement or a list of accepted documents, so bring a government issued photo ID and do not overthink the rest.

What to bring, and what stays outside

DLI provides the code book, in soft cover format and without tabs or other aids, along with a Laws and Rules Booklet in the department's current format. You bring a picture ID and a common desk type calculator with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square root and percentage functions. No other materials or electronic devices, including cell phones, are allowed in the building.

The building prohibition is the part people get wrong. It is not a rule about the examination room, so a phone in a bag by the door is still a phone in the building.

The five and a half hours

Everybody gets the same clock. That works out very differently by license: 25 questions across five and a half hours is over 13 minutes each, and 80 questions across the same window is about four minutes each.

The pass mark is 70 percent for every examination. On an 80 question paper that is 56 right, and on a 25 question paper it is 18.

Plan the four minute pace if you are sitting an 80 question paper. The lookups in an unmarked book are what eat the difference.

Results, and what happens next

Examination results are e-mailed to applicants generally within two weeks of the examination.

Passing is not licensing. The license fee is separate and paid after approval: $48 for most personal licenses, $88 for the Class A master.

If you fail, applicants may submit an application to retake the examination 30 days after notification that they failed, and must submit a new application and examination fee before being approved for reexamination. That is on the retakes page.

Disability accommodations, asked for at application time

The Licensing Examination Guide carries a summary of rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act and a request form to go with it. Three sentences decide what you have to do, and when.

The ADA requires this agency to make "reasonable accommodations" for applicants with disabilities in giving the examinations.

Read those together and the timing does the work. The obligation is real, and it is conditional on DLI knowing about your need before the day. The form goes in with the examination application, so an accommodation raised after the application is filed, or at the door on a Wednesday morning, is raised late.

The guide asks you to describe what you need against its own descriptions of the facility and the examination, and to attach more paper if the space runs out. It also states that the department may not refuse to allow a person with a disability to take the exam simply because the person has a disability, and that the building is accessible to persons with physical disabilities. Questions about the ADA itself are directed to the United States Department of Justice.

What the guide does not tell you
