The license a Bloomington electrician needs
The license is the state's. The Department of Labor and Industry issues every electrical credential in Minnesota, from the $14 registered unlicensed individual registration up to the Class A master electrician license and the contractor licenses, and no Minnesota city issues one of its own.
So the route here is the route everywhere: register, build the months, file the $50 examination application, wait for DLI to approve it, and sit the paper in St. Paul. What changes by city is permits, inspections and where you train.
What is not in Bloomington
No registered electrician apprenticeship sponsor is listed at a Bloomington address on DLI's construction electrician apprenticeship page. All eight sponsors on that list are somewhere else.
No electrician or electrical construction credit program appears in Normandale Community College's Bloomington credit program listing. The only electrician offering we found under Normandale's name is a non credit online continuing education product delivered by a third party platform, and that is not a Normandale degree program. Do not treat it as one, and do not assume it carries the state's one year experience credit allowance.
Saying that plainly is more useful than filling the gap. There is nothing local to enrol in.
What Bloomington is inside
The union route runs through the Minneapolis Electrical JATC, whose training center is at 13100 Frankfort Parkway NE in St. Michael, and the St. Paul Electrical JATC at 1330 Conway Street, Suite 150 in St. Paul. Both are registered sponsors on DLI's list.
The merit route runs through the Electrical Association at 3100 Humboldt Ave. S. in Minneapolis, which DLI lists with a $250 application fee paid by the company and applications always open. Its published standards run 8,000 hours over four years with at least 144 hours of related instruction a year.
Application fees and aptitude arrangements differ: $40 and the GAN battery at Minneapolis, $45 and the GAN battery at St. Paul, $250 paid by the company at the Electrical Association.
The one thing Bloomington owns
The wage area. O*NET OnLine, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, names the metro Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI, and gives it a median of $39.37 an hour or $81,890 a year for electricians.
That is the figure every Twin Cities electrician is measured by, and Bloomington is a third of its name. The statewide median is $37.58 an hour or $78,160.
There is no separate Bloomington row, so a recruiter quoting a Bloomington number is quoting the metro.
Permits and inspections
Minnesota splits electrical permits between the state and local authorities having jurisdiction. DLI tells contractors that if the authority having jurisdiction column lists State, file the permit with DLI, and if it shows Local, contact the local city or township.

From Bloomington that is a straightforward morning, but it is still a weekday and the paper starts at 8:15. DLI supplies the code book, in soft cover and without tabs or other aids, and no phone comes into the building.
Your next move in Bloomington
Pick a route rather than a location. All three metro sponsors take Bloomington applicants, and none of them is in Bloomington.
If you want the college year of experience credit, the nearest Minnesota State option is Hennepin Technical College, whose Construction Electrician diploma is taught at Eden Prairie in the evening. It publishes a licensure statement that names the journeyworker, power limited technician and maintenance electrician licenses.
Either way, register with DLI as soon as you are working. That $14 registration is what makes the months count.
