The license a Brooklyn Park electrician needs
The license is the state's. The Department of Labor and Industry issues every electrical credential in Minnesota, from the $14 registered unlicensed individual registration up to the Class A master electrician license and the contractor licenses, and no Minnesota city issues one of its own.
So the route here is the route everywhere: register, build the months, file the $50 examination application, wait for DLI to approve it, and sit the paper in St. Paul. What changes by city is permits, inspections and where you train.
The two colleges, and what they actually offer
North Hennepin Community College is in Brooklyn Park, and its full program list contains no electrician, electrical or energy program. That is the whole finding and there is nothing to soften it with.
Hennepin Technical College has campuses at Brooklyn Park and Eden Prairie, but its Construction Electrician diploma is taught at Eden Prairie in the evening, with a daytime option in spring semester only. The program was on a waitlist when we read it.
Hennepin Tech does publish the licensure statement that matters, quoted: successful completion of the program fulfills the one year's experience credit allowance for a Class A Journey-worker electrician, power limited technician, or maintenance electrician license applicant according to Minnesota Statutes, section 326B.33. The faculty contact on the page is Sean Lindeborg, (952) 995-1388.
Note the spelling in that quote. The college writes Journey-worker with a hyphen where the statute writes journeyworker, which is one more version of a word this trade cannot settle. Ours is on the terminology page.
The nearest program north of here
Anoka Technical College, at 1355 West Highway 10, Anoka, MN 55303, runs Construction Electrician as an Associate of Applied Science at 82 credits.
Its page states that the program is approved by the State Board of Electricity, the Twin Cities Joint Apprenticeship Committee and many unions, and that many graduates of this program join unions to complete their apprenticeship training.
That approval statement is worth having, because DLI publishes no list of approved two year electrical programs. The only evidence that a program supplies the one year experience credit allowance is the program's own statement.
The apprenticeship routes
No registered electrician apprenticeship sponsor is listed at a Brooklyn Park address on DLI's page.
The Minneapolis Electrical JATC training center at 13100 Frankfort Parkway NE in St. Michael is the closest registered union program, and Brooklyn Park sits between the city and it. The Electrical Association program on Humboldt Avenue South is the merit route, with a $250 application fee paid by the company and applications always open.
Application fees and aptitude arrangements differ by sponsor, so read the sponsor list before you pick one.
Permits and inspections
Minnesota splits electrical permits between the state and local authorities. DLI tells contractors to file with the state where the authority having jurisdiction column says State and to contact the local city or township where it says Local, and publishes an electrical inspector lookup keyed to the address.
Whichever applies, the code is the 2026 National Electrical Code for permits filed on or after August 17, 2026, adopted without Minnesota amendments.
What the work pays
O*NET OnLine, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, gives the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI metro a median of $39.37 an hour or $81,890 a year for electricians, against a statewide median of $37.58.
Brooklyn Park is inside that metro. There is no separate city row.
Your next move in Brooklyn Park
If you want the college year of credit, the two realistic options are Hennepin Tech at Eden Prairie and Anoka Tech at Anoka, and both publish a licensure statement. Check the waitlist position before you plan around a start date.
If you want to start earning now, get hired, register with DLI for $14, and start the 48 months. Check the employer on the state license lookup before you sign.
